'Dogs bounce back in win over UCSD

SAN DIEGO - The No. 7 Fresno State water polo team defeated No. 14 UC San Diego in come-from-behind fashion to wrap up the Triton Invite on Sunday morning. The Bulldogs defeated the Tritons 12-10.

Senior Brooke Ochoa led the Bulldogs with four goals while Hailey Andress and Abbey Simshauser scored three apiece. Marit van der Kolk and Elisa Grim added one score each.

How it Happened

UC San Diego got out to a 2-0 lead before Ochoa could score her first of the morning. The Tritons scored two more before Simshauser ended the scoring drought for the Bulldogs. UCSD added another before the end of the first quarter as the Bulldogs trailed 5-2 through the first eight minutes.

Fresno State scored the first two goals of the second quarter behind the efforts of Andress and Ochoa, cutting the Triton lead to one, 5-4. UCSD took advantage of a powerplay opportunity to extend its lead, but Ochoa put one back on the board for the Bulldogs off a penalty shot. Fresno State trailed by one at the half, 6-5.

The third quarter was the momentum shifter for the Bulldogs as UCSD was held to just one goal in the quarter, scoring it at the 7:03 mark. The Bulldogs took the lead, and didn't look back. Grim, Ochoa, Simshauser and Andress each contributed one goal each in the third quarter as the Bulldogs led 9-7 at the buzzer.

SImshauser won the fourth quarter sprint, and van der Kolk capitalized with a goal on the opening possession. UC San Diego responded with their first goal in nearly eight minutes, but Fresno State had two more goals scored as an answer to the UCSD goal. The Tritons began a comeback opportunity, scoring two to end out the quarter, but the comeback fell short.
