'Dogs drop final game in Daytona to Penn State

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Fresno State faltered against the pressure of a long, athletic Penn State squad on Saturday, being forced into 34 turnovers en route to a 68-49 defeat in their final game of the Daytona Beach Invitational. The turnovers resulted a 26-point advantage for the Lady Lions in points off turnovers (32-6).

Amiee Book, Yanina Todorova and Maria Doreste finished with a team-high eight points. Alexa Williamson led all scorers with 15 points for Penn State in 20 minutes off the bench.

How It happened

Fresno came out quick behind hot shooting from 3. Amiee Book knocked down her first two from the left corner. The 'Dogs held a 14-7 advantage midway through after connecting on four of their first five from deep. The Lady Lions then went to a press the remainder of the half. It resulted in a 30-9 run while forcing 15 turnovers. The Lady Lions took a 37-23 lead after 20 minutes.

Penn State maintained its press and its double-digit lead through the third, and extended it to as much 27 midway through the fourth, through a 14-1 run at the start of the final period. A pair of triples along five points from Maria Guimaraes down the stretch helped the 'Dogs get the deficit down to the 19 where it finished 68-49.

Notes

Amiee Book scored the 1,000 point of her career with her second made 3-pointer in the game. She is the 29th Bulldog to join the 1,000 point club.

Book is the the eighth player to score her 1,000th career point as a Bulldog under Jaime White, joining Alex Sheedy, Bego Faz Davalos, Candice White, Maddi Utti, Aly Gamez, Haley Cavinder and Hanna Cavinder.

Fresno State lost its second game to Penn State in the all-time series (0-2).

The Bulldogs' 34 turnovers were its most since Nov. 28, 2006 against Cal State Fullerton (34).

Fresno State allowed a season-high 68 points, snapping its streak of four straight games holding opponents below 50 points.

The 'Dogs outrebounded its fifth opponent of the season, holding a 44-27 advantage on the glass over the Lady Lions who came in averaging 43.2 per game, fourth in the Big Ten. That resulted in a 16-8 edge in second-chance points.

Fresno State knocked down a season-high nine 3-pointers (9-of-30).

The Bulldogs' defense held Penn State to just one 3-pointer (1-of-10).

Fresno State held 2021-22 All-Big Ten first team selection Makenna Marisa to six points on 2-of-13 shooting. Entered averaging 18.7 points per game.
