A California high school Spanish teacher is accused of having a sexual relationship with an underage student, the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office confirmed to the Modesto Bee.

Dulce Flores, 33, who has worked at Riverbank High School since 2016, was charged with unlawful sex with a minor for her alleged relationship with a 17-year-old student that took place in 2023. Police launched an investigation into Flores after receiving a tip about the alleged relationship.

Flores was placed on leave of absence during the investigation, the Riverbank Unified School District confirmed in a statement to the Modesto Bee, adding that it was cooperating with authorities and had been in contact with the families of students enrolled in the teacher's classes in an effort to minimize “any disruption to their instruction for the remainder of the academic year.”

“It is truly unfortunate for our district to face a situation like this,” Superintendent Constantino Aguilar said. “While we continue to work with law enforcement, the district will also look to determine what options it may have available to independently address this matter.”

Flores was arrested at her home last Tuesday (February 24) and taken to Stanislaus County Jail, where she was held on a $20,000 bond.
