Dynamic offense leads 'Dogs to 17-6 win

FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 8 Fresno State water polo team picked up their seventh-straight win on Saturday afternoon at the Aquatics Center, defeating Azusa Pacific 17-6. The Bulldogs improve to 11-7 overall, and 4-0 in Golden Coast Conference play.

The Bulldogs were dynamic on offense with eight goal-scorers in the win. Sophomore Brooke Ochoa stayed with her consistent ways, firing a team-high five goals on six shots. The freshman duo of Ashley Williams and Hailey Andress scored three goals each, while Daphne Guevremont added two and Cynthia Rosa, Kaitlin Howarth, Jillian Schultz and Elisa Grim scored one apiece.

All three keepers split time in the cage on Saturday with Paula Nieto Jasny notching the start, and recording seven saves in 16 minutes of play. Kelly Villanueva and Abigayle Armstrong split the remaining two quarters as Villanueva had two saves and Armstrong had one.

How it happened

Fresno State scored the first six goals of the game.The scoring got started with a converted penalty shot by Ochoa in the first 90 seconds of play. The Bulldogs defense didn't allow a goal until the 6:33 mark of the second quarter. The Bulldogs responded with four-in-a-row from four different scores to extend their lead to 10-1 with 4:10 left in the second quarter.

At the halftime break, Fresno State led Azusa Pacific 10-2.

Scoring slowed in the second half, but the Bulldogs were able to stay comfortable in their lead. Fresno State outscored the Cougars 4-1in the third quarter to take a 14-3 lead into the final eight minutes.

The teams were even 3-3 in scoring in the fourth quarter. Fresno State had goals by Andress, Guevremont and Ochoa in the period.
