Diamond 'Dogs make a statement with walk-off win

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State baseball team rocked Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium with a walk-off win against the New Mexico Lobos to secure a series win on Saturday afternoon.

The Diamond 'Dogs recorded 15 hits, a season-high, in the 9-8 victory over the Lobos.

On the mound, Jaykob Acosta earned his first career win by throwing only one pitch to strike out the Lobos' final batter.

With his back against the wall, Tommy Hopfe had the game-winning hit with 2 outs and a full count in the bottom of the ninth.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Scoring started early with the Lobos and 'Dogs each scoring one in the first inning.

After giving up a grand slam in the top of the second, Fresno State fired back with three runs to close out the inning, with Ben Newton hitting his first home run of his Bulldog career.

Two more scored for the Lobos in the top of the fourth, after hitting their second home run of the night. Relievers Robbie Peters and Zach Statzer held New Mexico with two scoreless innings before the 'Dogs rallied back in the bottom of the sixth with a hard-hit double down the right field line from Bobby Blandford to tie the game.

Centerfielder Nikoh Mitchell took the mound in the top of the seventh and pitched for 2.2 innings, giving up only one run and racking up three strikeouts.

With a one-run deficit and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, first baseman Tommy Hopfe excelled through the pressure, hitting a single to the left field wall and bringing in the game-winning runs.
