Dogs sharpen up in scrimmage

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State equestrian team got its 2021-22 season started with its annual Red vs Blue Scrimmage on Saturday morning at the Student Horse Center. Fresno State also had a handful of alumni compete in Saturday's scrimmage in part of alumni weekend for the program.

The Blue team won the day by a 15-10 edging over the Red team.

Current Bulldogs Kameron Thorn (horsemanship), Sarah Semrau (reining), Ana Bertozzi (fences) and Taylor Holstead (flat) earned the Most Outstanding Performer honors in their respective events.

The Blue team won the opening two events, and carried a 10-4 lead into the break. Thorn scored a 76 in her horsemanship ride to earn the MOP in the first half. Bertozzi scored an 82 to her opponent's 65 for her MOP in the fences.

Semrau earned the reining MOP with a 70-66.5 point in the event. With the flat rounding out the events for the day, Holstead secured the MOP with a 79.5-61 ride.

Nine true freshmen saw competition action in the Bulldogs' scrimmage on Saturday. Fresno State begins its regular-season competition at home on Oct. 1-2, hosting South Carolina and TCU. Admission and parking to all Fresno State equestrian events are free of charge.
